Using an inferior plate can trick most people into eating less, correct? Wrong, according to a whole new study published in a Journal of Consumer Research. The study authors say you could trick yourself into eating less if you a different approach: coloration.

The research workers compared asking participants to implement smaller bowls and toy plates to using different styles. In the "size matters" part of the study, they did eat less if they used a salad plate as opposed to dinner plate and a small bowl rather than large bowl. The trouble: follow-up studies show that will what they called a "bowl bias" detracted out of your benefits. Aware that these folks using a significantly more compact plate, they didn't eat a significantly less. What did work: another food and plate hues.

Participants in your study ate pasta together with white sauce or pasta with red sauce for a large white or reddish plate. By contrasting the sauce color considering the plate color, they reduced their serving size by to the extent that 21 percent. In add-on, using a contrasting tablecloth coloring helped. Here are examples:

  • Serve your current golden chicken noodle soup inside of a colorful red and black color bowl.
  • Enjoy avocado salad inside a bright orange bowl.
