The Government Trade Commission announced now that shoe company Skechers USA can pay $40 million to settle charges that hot weather misled consumers about the nation's Shape-Ups shoes.
The FTC lording it over says Skechers made unproven claims that Shape-Ups and it is other toning shoes would help people slim down, and strengthen and sculpt their lower-body muscles and even abs.
Under any FTCs settlement, Skechers simply cannot make any weight-loss, strengthening or other health claims as for the toning shoes unless they've been true and backed from scientific evidence.
Also amid Shape-Ups' transgressions: The shoes were extraordinarily ugly and made Frankenstein resemble Cinderella. Some of their celebrity endorsers included Betty Kardashian, Joe Montana, Tommy Lasorda and also Brooke Burke.
This FTC settlement follows similar settlement with Reebok not too long ago for its toning black-jack shoe claims. Reebok had to spend $25 million.
If you bought a set Skechers Shape-Ups, Resistance Runners or Tone-Ups boots since August 2008 and would wish to apply for part for the settlement, go to ftc. gov/skechers plus apply online, or you could call the FTCs Skechers hotline within 866-325-4186.
